Overcoming dental anxiety: Your road to a healthier smile

January 11, 2024

Like spiders or clowns, dental anxiety, also known as dental phobia, is a common but often overlooked issue that affects millions of people worldwide. For some, just the thought of sitting in the dentist’s chair can trigger fear and discomfort, which can ultimately lead to the patient avoiding essential dental care entirely. Here at Rapport Dentistry, we make it our goal to help our patients feel as comfortable as possible from the second you walk through the door. We know this is easier said than done, but with a positive and understanding attitude we aim to achieve this.

Dental anxiety is not just a case of jitters before a dental appointment; it’s a lot deeper than that. It is a genuine psychological condition characterised by an overwhelming fear of dental visits. Our supportive dentists are familiar with dental phobics and will adapt their approach to make you feel more comfortable and will answer any questions you may have, whether they are about a dental procedure in general or any upcoming appointments.

There are however a range of different ways you can help ease any anxieties you may have, and these are:

• Ensure your appointment is booked for the morning, by doing this you won’t be consistently thinking about it throughout the day

• Consistency is key, try and see the same clinician when you come in for your appointments as seeing a familiar face may help

• Contact the practice before any procedures, this way you can answer any questions you may have and will not be going into the appointment with the fear of the unknown, our dentists and reception team are always happy to help.

• Bring some headphones to distract yourself during any procedures, we also take music requests!

• Bring a family member or friend along with you for some support

• It is important to remember that your initial visit with us will be an examination so the dentist will only be looking, they also won’t do anything you aren’t comfortable with.

• Ease yourself in gradually, our dentists will often recommend starting with the least invasive dental treatments to build your confidence before tackling anything more complex.

It is good to bear in mind that dentistry has evolved massively over time, showing that technology and equipment is more sophisticated now than ever before and the pain relief offered is far more effective than it once was. It is also important to take into consideration the high levels of staff training which are required now, meaning that our staff members are more aware and equipped in dealing with dental phobics and here at Cobbs Garden Dental Practice our team shows a calm and gentle demeanour towards nervous patients.

It is good to be aware that there are support groups here in Milton Keynes, and if you feel they might benefit you then it is worth looking into to. Alternatively, there are online support groups readily available for your convenience, most of which feature positive experiences from patients which may also help in lessening any anxieties.

Dental anxiety/dental phobia is a common obstacle to maintain good oral health, but it is not impossible to overcome. By understanding the root causes of your anxiety and employing effective coping strategies, you can overcome your fear of the dentist and take control of your dental health. It is important to remember a healthy smile contributes to your overall well-being, so don’t let anxiety stand in the way of your oral health journey. Take the first step today towards a brighter, healthier smile!
